Lesson 3 - The Danger of Deserting God

3. However, at the same time, Paul makes much of his status as an Apostle of Jesus Christ. Is this a contradiction? Why does Paul’s bold reliance on his apostleship not take away from his argument, but rather add to it?

This question is closely linked to the one which proceeds it. That question reads: “Paul isn’t primarily upset over their departure from him or his teaching. It’s not about him. He’s shocked that they’re turning away from God, who has called them by grace. Why is this distinction important?”

In other words, is it a contradiction that he’s not concerned with their turning away from him or his teaching (but is concerned with their turning from God), while at the same time making much of his apostleship?

No, we shouldn’t see this as a contradiction. Paul is being sent as an emissary of God. He is a messenger and ambassador of the Lord Jesus Christ. He’s been sent with authority to call people to bow the knee to the King of kings and Lord of lords. So, of course he would be concerned as people instead turn away from the message of the gospel to another gospel which isn’t really good news at all.

His emphasis on his role as an apostle isn’t really about him. It’s about the One who sent him. It’s about his reliability and faithfulness as one sent by God to declare truth to these people.
